Baker's Ice Company, Inc.
Our History

Lloyd Baker began his business career in 1962 when he opened a Standard Oil Service Station in Pacific, Mo. During this time the trailer campers had become very popular. Pacific is located on I-44 Highway, west of St. Louis, MO. Lots of travelers heading out of the city for The Lake of the Ozarks stopped in Pacific for gas, they also needed ICE for their weekend trip.

The local Block Ice plant had burned a few years earlier, leaving no place to buy Ice in the area, therefore the decision to produce Ice was made. A 400 pound Ice machine was bought and placed in a small building along side the Service Station. This was the start of what would grow into Baker's Ice Company. Ice was bagged during slow periods or after hours for the next day. The merchandiser in front of the service station proudly displayed the words ICE. Soon other merchants in the area wanted to sell ice at their location as well. This created a problem as the production was not big enough. You guessed it, a larger machine was bought, with the additional production came another problem, what are we going to do with all the ice? We were making 1500 lbs a day. What is one to do? More locations were found to sell the product, and so it went. By 1972 the first Ice plant was built adding a P24 Vogt machine and freezer, now we had lots of room. A pickup with a cold wall unit was purchased and regular routes were run during the summer months. After Labor Day the plant was pretty much closed until spring. As the years passed more expansions and additions equipment where added to the facility. The Ice season became longer and the staff grew.

In January 1997 a long time dream became a reality for Lloyd and his family. Ground was broken for a new Ice Plant which would contain a 21,500 sq. ft. production area, with a freezer storage capacity of 300,000 bags. By the summer of 2000 we began bottling water at our facility as well as producing Ice.

Baker's Ice is located on Ice Street in Pacific, Mo. We receive a lot of comments about our address; many ask if we built our own street! The answer is yes, but that's another story!

One of the best things a Ice Company can do is being involved with a Regional and National Ice Association, with the changing world and ways of doing business it is almost a must, and besides we have the opportunity to make many good friends across the U S.

Baker's Ice is an active member in the Missouri Valley Ice Manufactures Association and the International Packaged Ice Association. We have seen many changes in the industry since becoming a member in 1972.

Lloyd was a past President of the Missouri Valley and served on the Board of Directors for many years, he also served on the Board of the Directors of the National Ice Association now known as the IPIA. Mary Ellen was Executive Secretary for the Missouri Valley Ice Manufactures Association. She held that position for 16 years retiring 10/2002.

Effective January 1, 2000 Tim Baker was elected President of Baker's Ice Co. Inc. now making the company a second generation business. Tim had previously served as Vice President and General Manager. Like many family owned business, Tim has worked at the plant since he was old enough to throw an ice bag. He is a graduate of Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. with a degree in Business Management and Communication.
